Introduction to Module

Today we were introduced to the WBPL module where we have to do a total of 35 hours work based learning for the module. We were intoduced to Engage which is the platform used by the university to find jobs, placements and help regarding job search and CV help. I am already employed as a Motion Designer for the careers service so feel confident in completing the 35 hours easily.

Guest Speakers and Research

Today Anwar Akhtar spoke to us about the importance of heritage in the British art industry. He spoke about his own experiences getting work as a freelance artist and filmmaker by speaking about his heritage and knowing about the history of the UK in particular. We spoke about our own heritage and was asked to be a part of a project involving young people’s views on London. The project can take any form; for example a video, serues of photographs etc. Since I am already very busy with work, the CMP exhibition and the upcoming hackathon, I have decided not to take on this task. However, I am very keen to see what my classmates acheive for this activity if they choose to do it.

In the afternoon, we spoke about our research into what jobs we would like to get when we graduate. I spoke about the many different resources availablen to students at the university and how they have helped my own job search. I also researched different production houses in London for inspiration and to ask about possible internships. I also have an interview with Disney Corporate for a placement role next week which I am focusing on to help me with my job search.

Today we spoke to Lucia Helenka who works in many different fields as a producer for her own company. It was very inspiring to hear about her journey and position she is in right now as a reputable person in the industry. I spoke to her after the talk to gain a little more insight into how she has gotten to where she is now and received her Instagram and email for future contact.

In the afternoon, Julian showed us his BBC Sounds special which had won him an award. The piece was very moving and incredibly well done. Julian spoke about how it is important to reach out to possible employers with enthusiasm in order to help meet important people in the industry.

This week we have also been setting up the gallery space for the CMP exhibition taking place tomorrow. I have spent a lot of time curating the space and printing posters for the exhibition as part of my work based learning.

This week, Kitti Edwards, a former CMP student, spoke to us in great detail about her journey to becoming a creative in the physical entertainment space. she gave us some great advice about what to talk about on our CV’s and the many resources available to help in our search. It was really great to hear about the success of a former CMP student as it helps to visualise a future in this field.

We then spoke to Emily from the Careers and Employability Service about CV’s and Cover Letters. She gave some great advice and it was good to know where we can get help if we need it further down the line. We also heard from a 3rd year about the module which was informative and helpful.

I also got a call back regarding the Disney internship opportunity and am happy to be taken onto the role starting in June. I am very excited about this opportunity and it helps greatly for my future job search.

Additionally, we took down the project space today. The exhibition was very successful and we received some lovely feedback regarding what was on show and it was great to complete something like this for the group and CMP as a course.

This week we heard from Lea, a 3rd year CMP student as she took us through her presentation for the module. It was really helpful to hear about her journey and what we need to do in order to succeed at the module.

We also spoke about who we know enjoys their job and why. This was interesting as it gave an insight into why people enjoy their jobs and what to persue in the future. I spoke about why I enjoyed my job as a student helper with the flexibility and people I work with.

We went through what is needed for the portfolio and presentation. This helped give me a guide as to what I need to focus on.
