ICMP: WEB MEDIA BLOG

30/09/2023

Following this week's ICMP web media lessons, here are my thoughts:
  • Use website to present a narrative/story- more towards story side
  • Use of random site generator like the 'I'm feeling lucky' button on Google
  • Use of casino style slot machine- whichever images appear take you to the page associated with such images
  • Spinwheel?
  • Introduction page which moves on as you scroll
  • Perhaps retro pixilated style?
  • There needs to be a menu which will allow you to chose where you want to go in case it takes you to a page you've already seen
  • 'Kaleidoscope' (Netflix) like storytelling where it doesn't matter what order you read of watch the story
  • Possible use of film as well as written media and photography
  • Lots of meaningful animations
Some websites I particularly liked during the lesson:
Slot Machine outcomes:

Following todays web media session, I have taken lots of inspiration from the student websites we were able to look at. Many of these websites used scrolling features which revealed the story and told an interesting tale through the use of interactivity, photos, videos, sound and illustration. I want to make my website visually interesting, utilising colour to create an atmosphere and animations to engross the player. Within my group, we decided on a casino themed website revolving around a murder. The player plays as the detective and navigates around the website to find clues and talk to suspects and is then asked who they think the murderer is before a video playing, revealing the killer. The website will use lots of animation; doors opening, slot machine, roulette table, cards, drinks and flashing lights, to make it interactive and fun for the player. We will also utilise colour and set a moody red and black scene with casino sounds and lights to enhance the experience. We now need to begin thinking about the actual story and not just the design elements so will meet up in the coming weeks to discuss and finalise the story.

Here are my notes:

In today's lesson we learnt about graphic design and how important composition is on a web page. Using InDesign, we started to create a Contemporary Media Practice poster and used grids, fonts and design language to help create well-crafted posters. During the next week, I will continue to develop my poster so that it can be printed next Friday.

Here are my notes from the lesson and current poster:

(This looked better in lesson but my computer has altered the appearance of the text in the middle)

Today’s web media session began by looking at the CMP posters that the class had made on InDesign. It was good to look at all the different designs and critique them. I felt my own design was quite plain and uninteresting compared to others and was described as a ‘text book cover’ so I will try to use more innovative design next time by taking inspiration from other designs on the web and my peers. We then moved onto html which was very interesting as we were able top make our own website. While this wasn’t particularly tricky to do, I found the process quite tedious since a fully-functioning website requires a lot of code. Despite this, I would like to develop my skills in this area as I would like to work on a video game as a personal project or even a project later during my time at university so I will try to do my own research and utilise the courses given to us on blackboard.

During today’s web media session, we learnt how to utilise CSS and we were prompted to think about the design aspect of our websites. I enjoyed colouring my website and making it more colourful and fun. I didn’t find this process particularly hard despite it possible seeming so to others. Because of this, I have taken up the role of website builder for our project and look forward to creating a fun, interactive website. My group also spoke about the overall theme and story for our website and we can now start thinking about design and the story which we will continue to do.

10/11/2023

Following today’s presentation on our web media project, we were advised to start on the project as soon as possible as it is a large project. As the web developer, I am excited to get started creating a fun and engaging website utilising an old video game asthetic. Our project is well thought out and there was little to no improvements to be made at this stage so we will continue to develop the story and graphics before putting the website together.

In today’s lecture, we were introduced to wireframing, the process of planning a website before it is coded. I enjoyed this as I like to plan before starting a project and Adobe XD didn’t seem too hard to use. We continued to think about our website and decided on more of a scolling story rather than an interactive game, as it would be easier to include the animations on a single page, rather than using them to get to multiple. The website will also consist of a lot of illustrations made by Caitlin,  of which some will by animated by Nattan. When you reach the bottom of the page, you are prompted to click on the suspect you think was responsible for the murder which will take you to the final page containing a video of the murderer’s confession. We will film the video as soon as possible and will utilise the facilities on site to do so. This will be managed by Noah and the website building by myself to help give everyone enough to do in the project.

I took a few notes during the lecture:

Over the weekend, Caitlin managed to finish the script for the website as so we can start implementing our ideas as soon as possible. In light of this progress, I went about developing the wireframe to reflect the story and how it will be told (it is not currently to scale).

24/11/2023

During today’s session, we discussed which platforms we could host our website on, including Wix, Readymag and Webflow. I am particularly interested to look at Webflow for my own experience and interest but will also look at Wix for this project. We have also explored using Adobe Portfolio for our website since our members are familiar with the platform. Since the wireframe and story is finished, we can now focus on illustration (which we will all help with) and web development which we will all have access to and be able to edit based on the wireframe.

During both today’s photography session and web media session, the group worked on our web media project by doing some headshots and working on the website. The headshots were taken in the photography studios and will be used as characters on the website. These were inspired by some of the headshots we have taken before and police headshots. We then focused on the website, sporting a more comic and old paper feel. I have delegated illustrations to the group which we will aspire to get done before next Friday. As the web developer, I am going to take a look at Webflow as a place to host the website rather than Adobe Portfolio as there will be more opportunities for animation.

Today I began working on the website so that we have a lot to share during our session tomorrow. Using the wireframe, I placed all the elements of our project onto the website and organised its general feel and look. By utilising the photography and graphs we had done as a group, I put together an almost completed website to show tomorrow. We now need to work on the illustrations for the website and the eventual video which we will film next week. I used Wix to build the website, but one thing to note is that it comes out different depending on the device used to view the website: I will try to rectify this in the coming week.

08/12/2023

During the crit week session today, I presented our website to the class who very much enjoyed it and gave a lot of possitive feedback. One thing that was mentioned was the multiple choice in the middle of the story where we could include a sound file which says “Good Job!” or a catch up to what has happened so far. I also want to add some background casino music to the home page which will play throughout the experience. I will also discuss with the group about fonts and the video which we will shoot next week. We also need to do some illustrations for the website before it is published.

11/12/2023

Today, I booked out Edit 12 to work on the web media project with Noah and Nattan. Over the weekend, I drew some illustrations for the website and Nattan had done a couple too. We placed the images and made the website more fun and friendly, utilising some of Wix’s controls. We also changed the ending so that there are three different endings depending on who you chose to be the murderer. We also added some background music to help create an ambience and Nattan has asked his friend if he will do a custom version for us to use.

Today, myself, Noah and Nattan booked out M block Studio 2 to film the final video in our web media project. Although it was quite frustrating having to do a risk assessment and the booking was very last-minute, this was an enjoyable experience and we got a lot done in the short amount of time we had. I was the main camera operator and filmed Nattan and Noah acting out the interrogation scene and subsequent fight scene. This is the ultimate finale to the story and will be a fun way for the viewer to experience the ending. We then went to Edit 4 to edit the scene which wengt down really well with everyone’s input. The final result is something we are really proud of. Noah will make some final touches to the video and photographs then will send it to me to be put into the finished website. Unfortunately, Caitlin did not come to todays session which is dissapointing as it would’ve been a great help to have someone else behind the camera. Nevertheless, today was very productive and we are almost ready with the final product.

15/12/2023

While Tadej was overall impressed with our website and the visuals, there were a few minor issues which I will rectify. The spacing between sections needs to be consistant and the text should also be readable and on a different colour background so that it doesn’t blend in with the background. Some of the fonts may need to be changed as well and the title needs to be set in a way that is readable on all screens. These are all minor issues and the final videos, I feel, will bring the piece together in an enjoyable way. Overall, I am happy with the outcome of our website and am excited to see the end result.

23/12/2023

After listening to Tadej’s advice, I spent some time changing the formatting and visuals, as well as adding the end videos to the website. It is almost complete and I am so far, happy with the outcome. I have asked the group if there is anything else that needs to be changed and for Noah to do some sound recording for the middle section. I also used photoshop to create files for each of the suspects, including their mug shots at the end of the story. I would, however, have liked more input from the team and felt there has been little communication since the break other than with Noah which is a little dissapointing.

04/01/2024

Over the break, Noah and myself managed to finish up some of the loose ends on this project and improved the title screen as well as the files and some of the visuals. We decided to get rid of the multiple choice in the middle of the website as it breaks up the flow of the background music and doesn’t really add anything to the experience. I have also deleted the header and footer, which is not needed here, and tidied up the credits. The conclusion videos have been uploaded to the highest quality on YouTube and have been given thumbnails relating to their corresponding suspect. Because of the nature of Wix, however, some of the pages take a little while to load and the videos may need to be refreshed when their pages are brought up. There is nothing I can do about this unfortunately, but the experience is enjoyable nevertheless.

Now that the project is finished, to reflect, I very much enjoyed this experience and would like to do more website building and coding. Games development has been something that I’ve wanted to try and this experience has been somewhat of a gateway to that. I do, however, believe that a lot of the work was done by myself and Noah and little help was given from the other members of the group. While they had their reasons not be involved in certain aspects of the project, it is still dissapointing that they were unable to relay information to us. Despite this, I am happy with the outcome and enjoy going through the website myself. It is a fun and enjoyable story and I hope that you like it too.
